Graduation!

Warning: this will be very picture-heavy.

Graduation started with my parents coming into town and meeting me up at work so they could take a look around LPI and meet everyone. Then we got some lunch and headed up to my department's graduation reception at Rice. I got to see Janne and Francis before they headed back to France and one of my favorite students, Jordan.

It started pouring down rain as we were leaving Rice. In the case of rain during graduation the next morning, it would have been moved from the lawn inside, and only two people per student would be allowed to attend. This was a problem as I had my parents, my brother, my aunt, uncle, and cousin Erin. And since I would have been up most of the night preparing for the party at my apartment and then had to have gotten up at 5am to be up at Rice in time (not to mention my parents have seen me graduate three times prior to this one), we decided to skip the ceremony and get some breakfast and just hang out at my place. It was a hard decision for me, since it will most likely be my last graduation, and I solicited opinions from Em, Sara, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Steph... pretty much anyone who would talk to me. I think it ended up being the right decision, though. We actually ended up getting to spend more time together than if we had gone to the ceremony.

The actual party was lovely. Mom and Andy helped me quite a bit with the food. Dad even ironed my shirt because I was too busy cooking to do it. And Matthew got the plates and silverware out and lit candles around the apartment and didn't burn down the place. Erin came in and helped make spinach artichoke dip, Steph and Christi helped set up the drinks, and Justin corralled the cats into the guest room. Once all that insanity settled down, it was fantastic. We had enough food to feed a small army: puff pastry breadsticks (sesame seed and parmesan cheese), asparagus spears wrapped in puff pastry strips and baked, cantaloupe balls wrapped in prosciutto, cherry tomato-marinated mozzarella ball-basil skewers, chocolate-covered walnut cream (semi-sweet, milk, and white chocolate varieties), the aforementioned spinach artichoke dip with pita chips, an assortment of olives, some grapes, wine, soda, and beer. Most of the recipes were from a cookbook Steph lent me, and she helped me come up with some good wine choices. Juliane and Justin brought over several desserts, including a sea turtle cake (awesome!!). It was quite the successful event. Pictures are below.

i went into work early today to get some stuff done for stephanie before her noon telecon. finished it an hour and a half early and she was very appreciative. i got a lot done on my project. after work i went to the gym and did two miles on the elliptical and 40 minutes of weights working on abs, back, and arms. then i stopped by the store and got a few things and came home and made dinner. cinnamon apple and sage pork tenderloin. it was tasty. iphone pic below. watched the new series spartacus on showtime that we had on the dvr and now it's bedtime.

winter!

winter has come to texas! it's cold, windy, and raining. pretty much completely nasty out. i unfortunately have to be out in it this week to do perform my ta duties at school. office hours today and thursday, class in the morning yesterday, tomorrow, and friday, and a review session for their last exam tomorrow evening. and then i'm done!

i turned in my form saying i passed my defense yesterday. i'm going to go buy fancy paper tonight so i can print out the required two copies, get the signatures on the front, and turn it in before friday. exciting!

emily and i went to the breaking benjamin concert last night. it was a good time. there were some very intoxicated people in front of us so they were entertaining to watch. here are a few pictures i took with my iphone:

also, ghirardelli hot chocolate is awesome. i'm enjoying mine immensely.
georion23: (Default)
the food turned out amazing. the turkey was so juicy and tender we could cut it with a fork. check out this turkey magnificence, and the rest of the spread:

i have a lot to be thankful for this year. most notably, my dream job starting in january, finally getting out of school, great friends, and someone who matches me pretty perfectly in every way. i'm very lucky.

i'm excited that we still have an entire weekend to relax. em and i have a party to go to that one of her coworkers is throwing tomorrow night. should be fun. but that's all we're doing for the rest of the weekend. we got the house decorated for christmas today. all that's left to do is decorate the tree. we might do that tomorrow. we'll see.

oh, and hook 'em horns! we beat a&m, so as long as nothing goes wrong in the big 12 championship, we might get a shot at the national championship. quite exciting. colt mccoy had quite a game, so hopefully he'll get the heisman he deserved last year.

and now, i'm going to go relax in bed. :)
georion23: (Default)
menu for the dinner:
  • turkey rubbed with compound butter of savory, parsley, and thyme, both inside and outside of the skin so even if one eats no skin, they still get the herb flavors
  • em's sweet potatoes
  • my mashed potatoes
  • dressing
  • green beans
  • corn
  • dill glazed carrots
  • cresent rolls
  • homemade gravy from turkey drippings
  • em's pumpkin pie
  • my chocolate pie

turkey is in the oven. pies are done. em's sweet potatoes are boiled and mashed and in a pan awaiting marshmallows and a quick trip into the oven. i'm about to start peeling and boiling my potatoes and chopping vegetables for the stuffing and the carrots. the turkey should be done at 5:30. reynold's turkey bags are amazing. they cut the cooking time down like crazy (2-2.5 hours for a 12-lb turkey!) and the meat is crazy juicy, too. best. invention. ever. it's going to be an awesome meal. i'm excited! two more hours to go!

happy thanksgiving, all!
georion23: (Default)
i know it's uncharacteristic of me to be spewing so much happiness, but you'll have to bear with me for awhile at least. i'm feeling really good. my house is clean, we have a bunch of candles lit that smell nice and look pretty, i got to take a long leisurely shower today, all the food has been purchased for thanksgiving, we have fresh flowers in the house that have opened beautifully, and really my only problem is a headache that's almost gone. i feel a lot lighter. em got home early and is playing a football video game and i am freely surfing the internet. with no guilt because i should be doing something for school! i finished editing the portraits of terri's dogs that i took when we were in austin back in october. now i'm waiting for sara to get here, at which point we'll go to dinner and see 2012. nothing says thanksgiving like a good disaster flick.

we were looking at the calendar earlier, and i've got stuff to do for the class i teach all of next week, but the week after that i have nothing. nothing! my thesis is due december 4th to the grad office, which is the last day of classes, and then my students have an open-note take-home final, so they won't have a review. i don't know what i'll do with myself! it's going to be awesome. i'm excited.

i was thinking that having a job five minutes from my house will make it easier to do things like cooking and going to the gym. i'll be done at 5 or 6 and i can go to the gym and be home by 7. or if i want to skip the gym and make some awesome five-course meal, i totally can. it's going to be fun trying new recipes.

it's friday

i'm ready to go. em's headed this way in an hour or so, and we're going to go have giant salads from barnaby's for dinner. mmmmm.

this weekend...
some work, some applications, some football-watching. my canadian friend sam is in town and she'll be leaving sunday, so i think she's going to come down to my apartment on saturday to meet the cats and get some pictures taken. probably a meal will be involved. i'll have to figure out where to take a vegetarian in clear lake.

photographer chase jarvis has created a new iphone app for editing photos and a web community where you can upload them. i've got a link to my photography site on my page, so hopefully i'll get some traffic that way.

these are some of my recent favorites:

mushrooms in the grass at rice

we got a little grill for the patio, and i've been doing a lot of grilling. steaks, corn on the cob, bread. good stuff. i'll be branching out into different meats soon. also, i've discovered pomegranate lemonade. it's tasty and a fun shade of neon pink.

a couple other random things. my friend morgan and i were chatting in the student center and sat down at a table. there was a box on it and we figured they were party napkins or something. we opened the box, and inside was a giant blue gemstone. probably leaded glass. very heavy. very blue. very random. unfortunately, neither of us carries an electron microprobe or mass spectrometer with us, and taking it would technically be classified as stealing, so we don't know what it was.

and then on 09/09/09 there was a double rainbow when i was driving to school. it was pretty. i took a picture with my phone while driving, which came out okay. it's too bad i didn't have my nice camera with me.

lastly, i went to my first rice football game last saturday with my canadian friend sam, her canadian friend sarah, emily, and our neighbor liz. we lost but it was a good time. the band was so tiny though! and they had electric guitars, a cello, and a ton of violins. strangest thing. here's a panorama i took with my phone. sam and sarah are on the left, and em and liz are on the right.

georion23: (Default)
emily and i had our friend brian over for thanksgiving, and i finally got around to uploading all the pictures. i made most of the food, but em helped quite a bit. not in the pictures are the two pies: em's pumpkin and my chocolate. om nom nom.

i wish i had a popsicle. it's 80 degrees and sunny outside. i want to sit out on the patio and read my paper and eat a popsicle. an orange one. yes.
georion23: (black tie mousse cake)
since it has been raining so much, lake travis was past full so they opened a floodgate at mansfield dam, and i got some cool nighttime photos. sara and i went to friday's for dinner and got oreo cake for dessert. it was served on a long, rectangular plate with a trail of chocolate leading to a strawberry on one end. while walking around shopping in the arboretum, sara, emily, and i came across some wandering jew plants, complete with fresh rainwater drops.

georion23: (excited)
woo! my friends christi and johnny (below) are getting married in austin in a couple of weeks. they've hired me to be the photographer so they're paying for my flight to austin! i'm so excited. i've never shot a wedding before. it should be fun. i'm a little nervous but i think it'll be great. they're getting married at chapel dulcinea, which looks gorgeous. and, since i'll be in town, sara, emily, and i are going to the midnight opening show of spider-man 3. yay! and i'll get some chuy's mexican food and county line bbq. yum.

also, the abstract for my thesis was emailed out today. seems this whole defense thing is actually going to happen. exciting. the abstract can be read and admired by all here )
georion23: (guitar)
i talked to todd for a long time tonight. it was nice to have a decently-sized conversation. our schedules haven't matched up in quite awhile. he played me a few songs that he had learned on his guitar. so i pulled out mine and i actually remember a few chords. my callouses are gone and my fingers are back to being delicate like flowers. maybe if i'm in austin over the summer i can work on getting them back. after my fingers got too sore to continue, i took some pictures.

a few more )

i redid my experiment that screwed up my whole plot and it looks like this one contains crystals, as it should. so the 16 hour day in the lab i put in yesterday appears to be worth it. i'll be microprobing tomorrow to find out what kind of crystals i have. very exciting. it's nice when everything comes together.

cate and i got to talk for a bit this evening, too. she's thrilled about my acceptance to rice. we're going to get together when i'm back in texas. i can't wait. she's awesome.

beck gave me some fudge from canada. oh man. those canadians know how to make fudge. it was amazing.
georion23: (heather and sara)
i decided to take the day today just for me. i slept in, chatted with zack for awhile, cleaned up the kitchen because it was bugging me, and spent some quality time with kepler. i made chocolate chunk and peanut butter insanity cookies. my house smells really good now.

i got to talk to sara for awhile, which was great. she's doing well and is so happy to be done with chemo. she was telling me how excited she was to know that next weekend, she won't have to be sick. she can plan something to do. she can do anything. it's wonderful. we talked about todd a bit and how a girl named heather asked him out. i don't know what it is about heathers and saras being attracted to wegner boys. and i told her about him being promoted to sergeant, and we're both very proud of him. sergeant todd! he's going to be in uniform at my graduation. so fun. i also made plans to meet up with jamie and christi when i'm in houston for lpsc. woo!

my entire torso is sore from spending so much time at the batting cages with todd and kirsten last night. it was a blast, and i really needed the practice since i haven't been able to play the last few weeks because of my sprained finger. we've got a game on sunday night. guess i'll have to tape the oscars. i'm sure ellen will make it hilarious.

i painted my toenails a fun shade of green called "big money frost" (yes, i'm laughing, too.) and took some more pictures of the sky after it got dark. no wispy clouds tonight. it was perfectly clear.

so, tomorrow i'll finish grading and write up my annual report and program of study. and make teriyaki pork loin. yum. but for now, it's time for ranch chicken and some tv-watching. it's been nice to have a day to relax.

i passed!

my tech review went smashingly. tom said he would write a letter to the graduate committee saying my committee unanimously thinks i should graduate in may. i saw john later and he shook my hand and told me congratulations. so, awesome for me. abby, becky, emily, and zack all got to hear my talk at least once, and becky made me brownies. mmmm chocolate. kepler helped me study:

after my tech review, zack, kirsten, todd, and i went to the cheesecake factory

this weekend should be a blast. tomorrow i'm going over to beck's to swim in her heated pool. then sunday beck and i are going to the tucson gem and mineral show. it's one of the last days so things will be super-cheap. i can't wait. time for more cheesecake. yum.
georion23: (asu)
i'll be presenting my thesis research in a talk at LPSC! no poster this year. excellent. my abstract can be read and admired by all here. the guy giving the talk right before mine is doing the same thing i am but has more water in his composition, and he references my previous work a few times in his abstract. fun!

i'm dehydrated and have a headache so i'm having some gatorade. red is my favorite flavor.

spent yesterday (and friday) at the microprobe analyzing my samples. listened to the entire third season of friends (that my lovely cousin erin gave me for christmas) playing on my laptop yesterday. it was nice to have something to listen to besides the humming and clicking of the machine. beck and i sent some entertaining emails back and forth, too. she's so funny.

after i got home, i found the tulips zack bought me had opened nicely. kepler decided they'd be fun to attack.

zack just got back from the field and checked on the brisket that i cooked last night. naturally, it is awesome and perfect. yum. just a little longer in the cooker and i can have some for lunch.

hell yes

georion23: (top view)
oh man, i feel great. actually, i'm exhausted and have a throbbing hip. i just got home from my lab and it's 2am. but, i was so productive and got everything done that i needed to! should be able to have my starting material cooking in the furnace over the weekend. so exciting! that means starting experiments next week! i'd like to have a whole set of experiments done before tom gets back from field camp so he knows i can be injured and still be productive. hell yes. i kick ass. and i'm in a weird mood. combination of elation and exhaustion. makes for fun times. so yeah. don't ask. i don't know.

todd came back today. i picked him up from the airport and we went to ruby tuesdays for lunch. salad bar and a cheeseburger sans the bun. it was so good. need to get some hamburger meat so i can make my own on my george forman grill. woo. took a bunch of pictures to school and put them up in my office. i should take a picture of my office and post it. my office is okay but it's really hot down there (i'd think it would be cooler in the basement but no) so i need to get a fan. and i don't have internet access, which will drive me nuts if i can't get it soon. all about my experiments. ) it was a long ass day but it was very satisfying.

apparently to get a passport you have to know where your parents were born. i was filling out my application this evening so i can take it to the post office tomorrow or friday and i realized i have no clue where my dad was born. so i'll have to ask my mom tomorrow. had to do some photo-shopping on my photo because they want a plain background. before and after. couldn't get rid of all the darker part on the right without way too much effort so i made it into a shadow. it's not as impressive as me making a person disappear and replacing her with landscape, but i think it'll do.

so i have a new addiction. crystal light has come out with a fruit punch flavor. it tastes like koolaid. so good. and south beach-approved. and it's making me drink as much water as i should. so it's good all around. yay!

i learned something new about my cat. if i want him to go completely nuts, don't get him catnip. give him tuna. holy crap. he has been bouncing around all night and i just gave him a little bite like six hours ago! he was trying to wrestle one of my paintbrushes and has been doing laps around the apartment. it's all quite entertaining. i hope he'll chill out and let me sleep though.

tomorrow. let's see. i might make it to the post office. i need to make sara's mp3 cd/dvd and print out the collage i made her still. kinda want to do the passport and sending everything off all in one swoop. so maybe that won't happen till friday. i've got physical therapy at 3:30 i think. and i should fill out my loan application and get the ball rolling on that. todd's sister is coming into town tomorrow and he mentioned seeing 'x-men 3.' woo. okay, falling asleep at the computer. bedtime. hehe, i just told my friend erin i was going to crash and she goes, "i am going to go to bed AFTER you?" i wonder if it's good that i'm so well-known for staying up to all hours of the night. oh well. party on wayne...
georion23: (winky)
good things:
* the grand state of arizona decided to give a pay raise to all state employees. this includes graduate students working at state universities. awesome.

* spent the last several days with kirsten and/or todd. thursday night we played pool at the cue club. friday night was the fondue fun night at the melting pot. saturday i went over to kirsten's for pork chops and we went and saw 'ice age 2.' cute. yesterday kirsten and todd came over for my cheesy pasta goodness and simpsons, family guy, and grey's anatomy. good times.

* i got to talk to both austin todd and sara yesterday. it was great to hear from them. i can't wait till our cruise. need to get sara's graduation present together. maybe today.

* semiannual sale at rei. got some new teva flip flops, a bike lock, and a couple of new nalgene bottles. woo. salesgirl was nice too.

* had a good conversation with my mom yesterday. i called her for mother's day. we talked about what's been going on with us for the last week or so and didn't go into anything heavy, which i guess is good for now. i need to send her card at some point.

* i got an a in geochemistry! rick apparently liked my paper. i need to schedule a meeting with him and discuss it and get his comments since it will be incorporated into my thesis. i'm so proud of that a. i can have as much ridiculous crap pile on me as i did this semester and still get an a in geochem. kick ass.

* i'm meeting with advisor tom wednesday to talk about my research project. this week is going to pretty rough work-wise since i'll need to bust my ass because he'll be leaving for field camp on sunday. need to get everything squared away before he leaves. but it's going to be good fun.

----------

bad things:
* due to offices being shuffled around and taken away to make more research space, tom has lost the office brad and i occupy and i am being relocated. this blows. i love my office.

* i don't get to see adrienne this week.

* i didn't sleep well last night. weird dreams.

----------

i think it's time for leftover cheesy pasta goodness. and a diet coke. yum.
georion23: (south park)
i made way too much corn for thanksgiving. i've been having it with every meal. it's getting a little out of control. if you're wondering about the title of this post, check out the 10th teen girl squad cartoon.

it's COLD. it's like russia. apparently tempe skips fall and goes directly from summer to winter. it was warm this weekend. it's winter today. had to turn on my heater last night. i guess it is almost december, but i was expecting something more gradual.

found a new thing to play when i want to waste time: tossing eggs

made mesquite lime chicken last night and i'm going to have leftovers in a few minutes for lunch. yum. i don't really care that it's barely 11:00. i'm hungry and i'm going to eat. mmmfood. maybe that'll help me wake up. didn't get nearly enough sleep last night. surprise. won't be getting sleep until next tuesday night really.

i spent a few hours last night grading labs so i could hand them back to my students during lab today as promised. well, i get to petrology this morning and john decides we aren't going to have lab this afternoon. argh! it's good because i came home and since i'm skipping physical chemistry that means i can work all day on my project but it would have been nice to have known about this last night so i could have worked on my paper rather than grade. sigh. my students have their second test tomorrow so liz and i are holding a review from 5-8. we'll order pizza and it will be grand. hopefully they'll come with questions and not just expect us to teach them the last half of the semester of petrology.

anyway, time for me to grab some yummy food and get to work.

summary: i made a lot of corn, teen girl squad is fun, it's cold, woo procrastination, yay leftovers, no lab today, get to work on my project all day, holding a review tomorrow, time to eat. woo.
