it is gorgeous outside. i'm currently working out on the patio at panera enjoying the perfect temperature, abundant sunshine, and low humidity. all this week it's been super humid and foggy in the morning (see photo from yesterday morning on my way into school below, others at facebook. please note: i didn't convert these to black and white -- it was just so damn cloudy that it sucked all the color out of the world.), but this morning it wasn't quite as humid and it's pretty much all burned off as the day has progressed. and i am loving it.

emily got a new job! she's going to be a jr imaging geophysicist for cgg veritas, and oil company here in houston. she's going to be earning twice as much, getting a ton of awesome benefits (3 weeks paid vacation per year, health, life, and dental insurance to name a few), and is actually going to be using her degrees and working with smart people! and, there is a lot of opportunity for advancement. she is so excited, and i'm happy for her. her current job has been making her miserable. the people there are complete idiots, they treat her terribly, don't pay her what she's worth, and there are no benefits. she put in her notice today. it's great. she's been so smiley for the last few days, which makes me smiley, too, so it's all good.

i got a couple new photo apps for my iphone, one of which lets me color part of a picture while leaving the rest b&w, and i've been having fun with it. i haven't really been taking my real camera with me lately, so all i've got from anything that has happened in the last few weeks is iphone photos. but they're turning out decently so it's okay.

i've been studying a lot for orals. kepler's been helping (see below). i need to talk to cin-ty this week to find out when they're going to be. they were originally going to be end of april-beginning of may, but now we may push them back to sometime in the summer so i have more time to prepare. we have two visiting scientists from france here right now that were here last year. we get along really well. i'm going to have a chat with them, probably the week after next, and bounce around some ideas with them. it's good to have a fresh perspective on things, and one of them always comes up with crazy random ideas that sometimes lead to interesting research, so i'm looking forward to talking with them.

lpsc is this coming week. i'm only going for a couple of the days. just don't have time. i'll go monday afternoon to see my co-advisor's talk, tuesday afternoon to one session, then i'm skipping wednesday but staying with my friends wednesday night because thursday morning at 9 i have to give my advisor's talk because he'll be teaching and i live an hour and a half - two hours away. i'll probably stay all day thursday because there's a poster session in the evening i want to go to, and then i'll go all day friday. but i'll have monday and tuesday mornings, and all day wednesday to work. then the next week, i have monday and tuesday, and then the california field trip is wednesday - sunday. ugh. it'll be a good trip. i got awesome pictures last year, some of my favorites i've ever taken. but, i'll be driving and/or exhausted the whole time, so that doesn't leave much time for me to do any work. then the day after i get back, em starts her new job. three weeks later school is done. yikes. i can use the bulk of my second proposal for my term project in my advanced petrology class, but it's not done yet. that'll be this weekend's fun.

args, my battery's about to die. have to head inside and plug in. i want to stay out here. whine. em's going to meet me at county line later for dinner (mmm bbq) so maybe we'll eat outside.

my abstract for the 39th lunar and planetary science conference is done! click here to read it.

i'll be presenting my thesis research in a talk at LPSC! no poster this year. excellent. my abstract can be read and admired by all here. the guy giving the talk right before mine is doing the same thing i am but has more water in his composition, and he references my previous work a few times in his abstract. fun!

i'm dehydrated and have a headache so i'm having some gatorade. red is my favorite flavor.

spent yesterday (and friday) at the microprobe analyzing my samples. listened to the entire third season of friends (that my lovely cousin erin gave me for christmas) playing on my laptop yesterday. it was nice to have something to listen to besides the humming and clicking of the machine. beck and i sent some entertaining emails back and forth, too. she's so funny.

after i got home, i found the tulips zack bought me had opened nicely. kepler decided they'd be fun to attack.

zack just got back from the field and checked on the brisket that i cooked last night. naturally, it is awesome and perfect. yum. just a little longer in the cooker and i can have some for lunch.

pachelbel's canon played by an enthusiastic electric guitarist. so awesome.

lpsc was great. so much fun seeing my name on posters and on powerpoint slides and hearing speakers say, "as dalton et al. showed in 2005..." people building off of my work is so cool. still not used to it yet. and talking with big names in experimental petrology and having them interested in my thesis, and then having my thesis change directions a bit to something even better that builds off of my previous work on the martian mantle from my lpi internship in 2004, and having people be even more excited about the new thesis, was all super. very nice seeing all the nasa/lpi/former asu folks, as well as christi, jamie, and lisa from sfa, and todd yesterday. ate a lot of tex mex and bbq. attended lots of parties. amy's talk went very well (yay amy woo!) so that was good. didn't sleep much but i had a blast. and then there was the shopping, movies, racquetball, laser tag, and playing pool and air hockey. had good times with old friends, enjoyed making some new ones, went to great talks, had tons of intellectually stimulating conversation. it was hard to leave, but it'll be nice to move forward with the new thesis (now thesis, as opposed to my then thesis). have some new collaborators, which is great. always good to have other people involved to bounce ideas off of. and my poster got good reviews too, which was fun since i hadn't really done any of that kind of work before. woo. the rodeo was so much fun. lonestar put on a hell of a show. got some good pictures all week, which i'll get up eventually.

kepler is very happy i'm back. he's been purring nonstop since i got home and following me wherever i go. he's sleeping curled up hugging my leg right now. so cute. also, wtf - it's cold and wet in tempe? weird. it was 80 degrees and mainly dry in houston.

scott is back from iraq and we got to talk for an hour and a half tonight. was really nice. we hadn't talked for a really long time. haven't seen each other in coming up on five years. think we're going to try and get together and play racquetball in austin in july.

time for bed. back to school tomorrow. woo geochem.

awesome

my lpsc poster is awesome. so are my friends. that is all.
georion23: (top view)
i submitted it at 4:59 cst when it was due at 5, but i got it in. and phil christensen (mars god) is second author. so cool. abstract can be read and admired by all here (pdf file). whew. i can breathe now. amy apparently was feeling the same way:
[16:16] amy: I have decided that grad school definitely takes at least 10 years off your life
[16:16] heather: haha
[16:16] heather: me too
[16:16] heather: i even told kepler (yes i talk to my cat, what of it), "no wonder people in this business get ulcers."

todd and i saw pride and prejudice last night. it was decent. my favorite line was when elizabeth accepted mr darcy's request for a dance and she couldn't believe she actually said yes. "it would be most inconvenient since i swore to loathe him for all eternity." hehe. excellent.

jorge comes back tomorrow and i'm picking him up from the airport and he's buying me dinner. free food woo!

had lunch with advisor tom today. that was fun. we had a nice talk. he's super.

so one of my favorite authors, dava sobel, is speaking at u of a on jan 23. i am so there. galileo's daughter is one of my all-time favorite books. it's going to be great. she'll be signing her newest book, the planets, which i bought last semester and am half-way through. it's okay, nothing near as good as galileo's daughter though.

we (sara, todd, and myself) are now the proud owners of a cruise! they took money out of my account and everything, so we are all set. we've got a nice room too. so exciting! todd starts college tomorrow (well, he had a month of school but they took him out to send him to iraq) so i wish him good luck! yay toddy woo!

went with sarah to scottsdale tonight to listen to a holocaust survivor give a talk. it was very interesting. the lady who gave the talk was so happy. i wish my parents could have gone and listened. she spoke of her experiences but also talked about her life afterwards and of love and respect of everyone, no matter their beliefs or race or anything else, and that the world would be a better place if there wasn't so much hate and judgment of everyone. hearing that from someone who has been through so much and could so easily be a hateful, bitter person but isn't at all was very powerful. i'm glad i went.

so after busting my ass doing my lpsc abstract, i am taking tonight and tomorrow off. going to put on my raging purple sfa sweatpants, park it on my couch, and watch movies with my cat for the rest of the night. tomorrow i've got to drop by the post office to mail christi's package and a cd of christmas pictures to my mom, but that's really all i absolutely have to do. so nice.

summary: lpsc abstract is in, jorge is coming back, tom is awesome, going to go see dava sobel, going on a cruise, todd starts college tomorrow, interesting talk tonight, people should be more open-minded and accepting of things that are different, time to lay on my couch and relax with mi gato. 'night all.

feeling energetic even though i didn't go to bed till 5am again. and i've been all kinds of productive today.

finished my lpsc abstract and sent it off to ron greeley and tom sharp for review. ron said it looks great; still waiting on tom. tom was happy when i told him amy and i reserved our room at the conference center back in novmeber. they fill up really quickly and it's a major hassle if you don't stay there and have to arrange travel to and from your hotel room. ron and i might turn this into a little side project if i've got time, maybe over the summer. could be fun. i have enjoyed the project so far. would be cool to turn it into a real paper. went shopping and got some stuff from target. got some racquetballs and bounced one around my kitchen with my racquet for awhile. wish my back was better so i could go play! and then i got a planner from office max as it appears to be 2006 now and my old planner doesn't quite work anymore. did dishes and cleaned up my desk so i can actually see it now.

cruise! )

so i'm not going to ta mineralogy this time. i'll be ta-ing colloquium instead, which will be nice because it's much less of a time constraint and i'll be able to get more research done. and i won't have the giant mineralogy lab block to worry about when scheduling things. so yay for having the coolest advisor who gets me an awesome ta job and makes sure i've got time for research. he's awesome. i need to go by chili's and get his gift card i'm giving him for watching my cat. he really got me out of a bind.

apple soda. yum.

jorge comes back tomorrow i think, and we'll be hitting this instrument proposal thing pretty hard. it's so cool. can't wait till everyone gets back from guatemala/elsewhere and school starts so we can really get going.

need to go by walgreens and unpack some more. wonder if sarah and i are going out tonight, or if i should cook this ham i bought. hmmm... or todd and i could go see pride and prejudice. so many choices.

summary: been productive, lpsc abstract is done, yay cruise woo, ta-ing colloquium instead of mineralogy, my advisor rocks, i love apple soda, instrument stuff is going to start up again soon yay, time to go. bye
