the last few weeks have been insane. steph had a birthday. i got her an awesome present. andy had a birthday. i made him dinner. i had a birthday. we had a little party at work, which was fabulous. i had a graduation, complete with party with family from out of town and madness all around (and really good food - more on that later). em's brother graduated today, so she's in boston, coming back tomorrow evening. i have pictures of many of these events, which will be posted at some point, but maybe not until june. we got a new person at work, with whom i am currently not impressed. we shall see how long she ends up staying. tuesday steph and i leave for dc for a conference that we are running and have spent the last several months putting together, which is terrifying. especially since new person at work severely screwed up on friday and had to start over, making what should have been a half-day job now go into day three. i'm anticipating tomorrow being a 14-16 hour day at work.

the weekend after next we'll be in nacogdoches getting em scuba certified, and my friend juliane is going to be taking a refresher course. i'll get to relax some then, and get a little diving in, which will be fabulous. it's been entirely too long. my tooth cracked (while i was minding my own business drying my freaking hair) on friday. and i'll need another cortisone shot into my spine for my herniated disc because it's apparently such a large bulge that the doc didn't really expect that it would be fixed with just one. super. those things will have to wait until after the 23rd when i'm back from dc, and maybe into june. oy. so, i'm still alive, but have a million fires to put out, and my firehose isn't nearly big enough. things should settle down significantly in june, which will be nice because i have a ton and a half of pictures i'd like to get online. including pics from my trip to the northeast over christmas. i repeat: oy. i'll elaborate on most of the things i mentioned at a later date. and just because i feel right now as if i'm incapable of posting without a picture, here is an iphone photo of the gorgeous tulips steph got for my birthday:

and now, i'm going to pass out for a few hours so i can start the madness that will be this week. night, all.

em and i had our two-year anniversary last month. it was a nice weekend. we went to watch my alma mater compete in basketball playoffs, took some pictures in downtown houston, and went to galveston. i made her a book of pictures from our first two years, which you can view here (~20mb pdf file).

my new doctor rocks. i went to him for my herniated disc and bronchitis. first appt with him was wednesday. he called me talk about some of the meds he prescribed wednesday evening. i called back to the same number later that night to get him to call in some pain meds for me, expecting to get a machine, but he answered. turns out it was his cell. so he called in the meds. i texted him earlier tonight asking if i could take them more often than directed because i was hurting, and didn't expect a response until monday, or maybe tomorrow if i was lucky. but he actually texted me back at 10:30 on a friday night. he's a keeper.

last week, i got tickets to go see the houston aeros play hockey on saturday for emily, andy, and me. then andy found out he had to stay in austin saturday night, instead of coming back saturday afternoon in time for the game. so, i had to find someone to take his ticket. problem is, just about all of my friends in the area are married and tend to want to hang out with their significant others, or they hate hockey. then i remembered a friend of mine from college, jennifer, lives in northwest houston and her husband, ryan, another friend from college, is in africa on business. i hadn't seen her since graduation in 2004 but we keep meaning to get together, so i invited her.

we met up for italian beforehand and then headed to the game. it was a blast! even though we hadn't seen each other in almost six years we picked up right where we left off. it was great fun. the aeros ended up losing (as i expected), but it was a great evening anyway.

on the way back home, we stopped at a grocery store to get a bottle of water and they had a coke display that was too fabulous to not take a picture. someone has a little too much time on their hands.

in other news, i have lost 21 pounds since starting work at lpi on january 4th. hell yes.

the end

that is the last slide in the last class of my graduate career. i have mixed feelings about it. i'm not quite finished, as i have to give a review session tonight, get a few more signatures, pay some money, and turn in my thesis. but sitting in classes is done for the rest of my life. it's weird, since i've been in school pretty much my entire life. not being in school will definitely be strange. but it's exciting, too. i can't wait to start my new job, and i'm glad i get a little time off before starting work. not having to commute is going to be very nice. so, it's a bit scary, but it should be good.

pretty cool! we crammed a lot of stuff into ten years! check it out here!
georion23: (Default)
the food turned out amazing. the turkey was so juicy and tender we could cut it with a fork. check out this turkey magnificence, and the rest of the spread:

i have a lot to be thankful for this year. most notably, my dream job starting in january, finally getting out of school, great friends, and someone who matches me pretty perfectly in every way. i'm very lucky.

i'm excited that we still have an entire weekend to relax. em and i have a party to go to that one of her coworkers is throwing tomorrow night. should be fun. but that's all we're doing for the rest of the weekend. we got the house decorated for christmas today. all that's left to do is decorate the tree. we might do that tomorrow. we'll see.

oh, and hook 'em horns! we beat a&m, so as long as nothing goes wrong in the big 12 championship, we might get a shot at the national championship. quite exciting. colt mccoy had quite a game, so hopefully he'll get the heisman he deserved last year.

and now, i'm going to go relax in bed. :)

i know it's uncharacteristic of me to be spewing so much happiness, but you'll have to bear with me for awhile at least. i'm feeling really good. my house is clean, we have a bunch of candles lit that smell nice and look pretty, i got to take a long leisurely shower today, all the food has been purchased for thanksgiving, we have fresh flowers in the house that have opened beautifully, and really my only problem is a headache that's almost gone. i feel a lot lighter. em got home early and is playing a football video game and i am freely surfing the internet. with no guilt because i should be doing something for school! i finished editing the portraits of terri's dogs that i took when we were in austin back in october. now i'm waiting for sara to get here, at which point we'll go to dinner and see 2012. nothing says thanksgiving like a good disaster flick.

we were looking at the calendar earlier, and i've got stuff to do for the class i teach all of next week, but the week after that i have nothing. nothing! my thesis is due december 4th to the grad office, which is the last day of classes, and then my students have an open-note take-home final, so they won't have a review. i don't know what i'll do with myself! it's going to be awesome. i'm excited.

i was thinking that having a job five minutes from my house will make it easier to do things like cooking and going to the gym. i'll be done at 5 or 6 and i can go to the gym and be home by 7. or if i want to skip the gym and make some awesome five-course meal, i totally can. it's going to be fun trying new recipes.

maybe it's the lack of sleep and the stress of my upcoming defense, but that comic cracked me up this morning.

so, i got the job at lpi!!! i'm so excited! i've wanted to work there since i was an intern in 2004. it's an amazing environment and the people are fantastic. stephanie, the woman who's going to be my boss is really great. she's been emailing me asking how my defense prep is going and telling me how excited she is that i'm taking the job. i start january 4th, so i've got time to do my defense, make any corrections to my paper, get it submitted, and have some time to relax over christmas. very exciting. really, if i can just get through the next four days, things will be loads better. plan for this weekend is to go through my thesis with a fine-toothed comb and look up any details i've forgotten and read over the abstracts of all the papers i've cited. and practice my powerpoint a few thousand times.

i was driving an hour and a half through the rain this morning through horrible traffic to make it to school too late to park anywhere but paid parking and i was thinking how nice it's going to be to have a five-minute commute through neighborhood streets to get to work. seriously. it's 45 minutes of driving plus 15 minutes of walking from the parking lot on a good day with no traffic. now i'll have 5 minutes of driving and 30 seconds of walking from the parking lot. it's going to be awesome. i can't wait. i actually only have four more days of sitting in horrible rush hour traffic to get to school. monday next week and mwf the week after thanksgiving. then classes are over and i'll have to run a couple review sessions and have office hours, but those will be in the afternoon. woot.

we're getting a cable box installed in the guest room this afternoon, so in a bit brian's taking me to lunch and then i'm heading home to work while waiting for the cable guy. just in time for sara to enjoy it when she comes to visit next wednesday. she's excited. i'm excited, too. thanksgiving is going to be so nice. i have an awesome job lined up and my defense will be done. yay thanksgiving.

the interview at lpi went really well! i have a second interview this coming wednesday, where i'll meet with the group i'd be working with and perform some sort of task. there also will be lunch involved, and the whole thing is supposed to take about four hours. i'm slightly terrified. this job would be perfect for me. it's coordinating planetary science education for everyone from girl scout leaders to college professors. and, lpi is all of five minutes from my house, so i'll be spending no money on gas instead of having to buy at least two tanks a week, and my health and dental insurance benefits start the day i start. they're all smart, funny, passionate people and i would love to work with them. i'd be sharing an office with one other person and have one whole wall of windows, where i can see all the deer that run around the building. all freaking amazing things. so hopefully i'll rock at whatever task i have to do and they'll hire me.

in other news, my thesis is just about finished. i'll be sending it to my advisor this weekend, and then my thesis committee gets it on friday. defense is the 24th. uggghhhhh. but after that, sara's coming in for thanksgiving on the 25th. we're going to go see 2012 (i am absurdly excited about this movie!), and i'm cooking thanksgiving dinner. i make a mean turkey. and badass mashed potatoes and chocolate pie. em makes sweet potatoes and a rocking pumpkin pie. and sara's bringing some fancy cookies from a place called tiff's treats. should be an awesome meal. and texas plays texas a&m so we'll have some good football to watch, too. the next day sara's going back to austin, and em and i are decorating for christmas. since we're going to new jersey for christmas, we're decorating as soon as thanksgiving is over so we'll have time to enjoy it before we leave. then i'll have to get to work on my thesis corrections. finished thesis is due to the graduate office on dec 4, which is also the last day of classes, so the following week all i'll have to do is office hours a couple of times, and maybe a review session or two for the final. so exciting. then to austin the week after that for a couple days for various and assorted doctor, dentist, and hair appointments, back to houston for more doctors and packing, and then leaving for new jersey on dec 18. good stuff. just have to get through the next two and a half weeks.

now back to formatting my thesis, as the formatting elves did not come and finish it for me while i was at target. sigh.
georion23: (Default)
em and i went to target to get cat litter and new flatware, among other things. we picked out this set of flatware and went to check out. the cashier rung up the flatware and cat litter (em was getting the other stuff.), and told me my total was $15.13. the flatware was $79.99, but rang up as something called "2 cup easy" at a grand total of $2.29. the cashier didn't even question it. so, i got something like a 97% discount. awesome!

it's friday

i'm ready to go. em's headed this way in an hour or so, and we're going to go have giant salads from barnaby's for dinner. mmmmm.

this weekend...
some work, some applications, some football-watching. my canadian friend sam is in town and she'll be leaving sunday, so i think she's going to come down to my apartment on saturday to meet the cats and get some pictures taken. probably a meal will be involved. i'll have to figure out where to take a vegetarian in clear lake.

photographer chase jarvis has created a new iphone app for editing photos and a web community where you can upload them. i've got a link to my photography site on my page, so hopefully i'll get some traffic that way.

these are some of my recent favorites:

thunderstorm coming in

spotlight at the britney spears concert

downtown houston

blink 182/fallout boy/all-american rejects concert

mushrooms in the grass at rice

we got a little grill for the patio, and i've been doing a lot of grilling. steaks, corn on the cob, bread. good stuff. i'll be branching out into different meats soon. also, i've discovered pomegranate lemonade. it's tasty and a fun shade of neon pink.

a couple other random things. my friend morgan and i were chatting in the student center and sat down at a table. there was a box on it and we figured they were party napkins or something. we opened the box, and inside was a giant blue gemstone. probably leaded glass. very heavy. very blue. very random. unfortunately, neither of us carries an electron microprobe or mass spectrometer with us, and taking it would technically be classified as stealing, so we don't know what it was.

and then on 09/09/09 there was a double rainbow when i was driving to school. it was pretty. i took a picture with my phone while driving, which came out okay. it's too bad i didn't have my nice camera with me.

lastly, i went to my first rice football game last saturday with my canadian friend sam, her canadian friend sarah, emily, and our neighbor liz. we lost but it was a good time. the band was so tiny though! and they had electric guitars, a cello, and a ton of violins. strangest thing. here's a panorama i took with my phone. sam and sarah are on the left, and em and liz are on the right.

the rear-ending incident resulted in my back muscles being sprained. weeee. i've got some muscle relaxers, and the doc only wants me at school for half days. i'm supposed to spend the rest of my time lying down resting my back. since i've got group meeting at 5 today, i'm just now getting to school, which is nice. mwf i ta from 9-10 so i have to be at school early, so then i leave at 2 or 3. a bit more than a half day, but oh well. i've got stuff to do.

all of my reading groups and group meetings have been moved to the afternoon except for one at noon on fridays, freeing up my lunchtimes. em's been coming and picking me up for lunch one or two days a week, which has been really nice. it breaks up the day.

the class i'm ta-ing is a 101 class with not a single science major among them, which is not uncommon. what is uncommon is that they're asking thoughtful questions and actually putting in effort to understand things. i even got emailed questions about the first homework assignment. i'm used to sfa and asu students who barely show up, ask questions that just show they weren't listening and hadn't read anything, and don't ask anything outside of class until right before an exam. this is a nice change. i expect that from upper-level students but i was pleasantly surprised getting it from freshmen liberal arts majors and football players.

i got a 32-inch samsung lcd tv for the bedroom this weekend, and em got a new dresser. it's so pretty! we had the 42-inch in the living room and then my old crappy tv in the bedroom that's dying so it's very dark, and red and black are pretty much the only colors. the new one is so big and bright and vibrant! no more, "i want to watch this show/movie, but i want to lie down so i have to pick because it's too dark to watch in the bedroom and see anything." exciting. :)

found a new band, at target of all places. i was listening to their demo music on some bose headphones and heard "tell me" by good old war and "best of everything" by barefoot truth. so i got their cds off itunes and they turn out to be great working music. and good driving music too. a lot of good things have come from target. the tv was $50 off there. and it turns out they have really amazing meat in their grocery section! we usually get everything from heb, but we were picking up a couple things and were at target anyway so we went to the meat section. they had fantastic looking steaks so we got a couple and some corn and french bread. went home and i grilled everything up on my tiny little grill on the patio. YUM. the steaks were juicy and had great flavor, the grilled corn was nice and smoky, and the garlic bread was toasted. i also made homemade mashed potatoes, and em made an apple pie. we had a feast. it was fantastic. i'm glad we have the little grill now. i've missed grilling. and as fall comes and it gets cooler it'll be even more fun. woot. it's also small enough to take camping, if we ever find the time. this fall is pretty packed.

my cousin erin is coming in this weekend for a visit. em is taking me to see britney spears (i know, i know, but she loves her and she bought my ticket.) wednesday. the following thursday we're going to see blink 182 with fallout boy, the all-american rejects, and asher roth. october 8-12 we'll be in arizona doing the photos for my friend beck's wedding and post-wedding party. october 17 em is competing in dragon boat races with her company. october 23-25 we'll be in austin doing portrait sessions and seeing people. october 31 we're going to see brand new in concert. november 14 we're seeing ludo. em's dad might be coming to visit sometime in november. december 4 is the enlightenment? banquet my dept holds. december 12 we're seeing kelly clarkson is the thriving metropolis of beaumont. then in late december we're taking a giant road trip from texas to new jersey/new york/pennsylvania for christmas. stops in atlanta and washington, dc, probably on the way back. it's busy. i think camping will probably have to wait until the spring.

sara got a new car yesterday. a steel-colored civic hybrid. i'm glad. she's been driving a kia for several years and it kept breaking and had some pretty major problems, like not being able to stop in the rain, even with new tires. i always worried about her when she had that car, so i'm glad she's gotten something more dependable. she has yet to send me pictures though. i'll have to get on her about that.

we had some storms come through last week and i got a couple pictures of the light shining from outside through rain on the window onto em's face. i think they turned out pretty cool. just slightly blurry from the long exposure.

it looks like i'm going to get some work in houston for a change! i was telling one of my geology buddies about my website, and another girl that's in the dept was there and said that she and her fiancee hadn't gotten their engagement pictures done yet. i sent her my website so she could see my stuff, and we'll see what happens. it would be nice to have something local, rather than traveling every time for a shoot.

back to work.

i was sitting at a red light this morning, as one is supposed to do at red lights, and a big black cadillac escalade plowed into me. so now my bumper is bent, as is a little of my rear hatch door. my neck is sore and i have a headache that doesn't want to respond to advil. ugh. not what i need right now. probably not what anyone needs ever, but this is particularly crappy timing.

i'm so happy. i got a's in both geology of mars from phil christensen and planetary geology from ron greeley. no word yet on my pchem grade, but those are the only two classes that actually count on my gpa so i'm ecstatic i got a's. i worked really hard, especially considering the cirumstances this semester, and i'm proud of myself. yay me!

the last few days have been complete madness. two finals, meetings and presentations and more meetings about this instrument we're proposing for a mars mission, and general insanity all around. today has been productive. went up to school and saw adrienne, stopped by the bookstore for some stuff for people, went home and payed my rent for january, back to school to pick up drugs from the pharmacy, saw sarah for a few minutes, made a bunch of phone calls, and now i'm finally sitting for a couple minutes. need to clean up my house and pack. think sarah and i may try to grab some food in a bit as well. all i've had today is a snicker's bar. just haven't had time to eat.

tomorrow i'm taking sarah to the airport at o-dark-thirty (6am), then coming home and showering and packing up my truck. then zack and i are caravaning the 16 hours to austin. ugh. we should get in around midnight. and then we are going to go eat chuy's mexican food for lunch on sunday. yum!

i'm going to miss my cat. i wish i could take him with me but it's just not feasible this year. maybe next year. christmas is going to be interesting. i've got a lot planned and some of the things are going to be pretty difficult. i have some ideas on how i'm going to handle things, and i have a lot of people supporting me and backing me up, which is nice. it's still going to be hard though.

weekend at bernie's is on tv. i'll watch a couple minutes while i get my second wind and get some motivation to finish everything i need to today, so hopefully i can get some sleep tonight. LONG day tomorrow. i get to see sara and todd soon. i can't wait. i've missed them a lot, especially this semester.

some fun while i'm wasting time:
damage from hurricane rita
hehe cat with problems (old one)
nasa administrator in trouble for using space shuttle for personal use
coke-sponsored rover finds evidence of dasani on mars

that's enough for now. i should get to work soon.

recap: i got a's in planetary geology and geology of mars, crazy last few days, been productive today, tomorrow is going to be so long but i'll end the day back in austin, christmas is going to be rough, i love my friends, time to get off my couch. woo.
